J Harry Whalley
J Harry Whalley is a composer and academic whose work lies at the
intersection of music, technology, and cognition. His research explores
the ways in which technology mediates our experience of music, with
particular focus on memory, health, and imagination. He has written
music for film, including the opening of the Banff International Book
and Film Festival with Bennington. His concert works include string
quartets and numerous pieces that explore the connections between
science and music. Harry’s academic career has been dedicated to
fostering the next generation of composers and technologists. He
established the Music Composition and Technology BA/BSc program at
the University for the Creative Arts, where he is now a Reader. His work
in this capacity has earned him a Visiting Professorship of SRH in
Berlin.
Kate Galloway
Kate Galloway is an Assistant Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute. Her monograph Remix, Reuse, Recycle: Music, Media Technologies,
and Remediating the Environment (Oxford University Press, forthcoming)
examines contemporary soundwork that remixes and recycles sounds,
musics and texts encoded with environmental knowledge. She also
examines the creative and social phenomena of internet music
communities and practices of listening to the internet, including
musicking animal memes, participatory fandom practices and the online
remediation and extension of sonic environments. With Paula Harper and
Steven Gamble she co-organized the Music and the Internet Conference
(2023) and with Harper and Christa Bentley she is co-organizer of the
first multi-day Taylor Swift Conference Taylor Swift Study Day: Eras,
Narrative, Digital Music and Media (2021). With Harper and Bentley, she
co-edited the collection Taylor Swift: The Star, The Songs, The Fans
(Routledge) and with Elizabeth Hambleton she is co-editor of the
collection Music and Sonic Environments in Video Games: Listening to and
Performing Ludic Soundscapes (Routledge).
